It only took two seasons for Ballard FC to claim their first USL2 Northwest Division Title. After CFC Atletico’s defeat to Oly Town FC on Sunday, July 9th, Ballard FC mathematically clinched the division title that looked likely from the first match this season.
After missing out on the division title by just one point last season, Ballard FC were eager to grab their first division championship this season and clinched with two league matches remaining.
Ballard FC will look to further their impressive 2023 season with two more regular season wins and then a deep run in the playoffs. Last season, Ballard FC made it all the way to the Western Conference Final, eventually losing to the reigning USL2 champions Ventura County Fusion. After last season’s run, Coach O’Neill’s side will be aiming to win the Western Conference Championship and go even further.
Although Ballard FC have clinched the title, another playoff spot is still up for grabs in the division. CFC and Oly Town are still battling it out for second place and the final playoff bid. Currently, Oly Town have a 4-point lead in the division standings but CFC has played one fewer match. The battle could end Wednesday evening as Ballard FC takes on CFC Atletico in Salem.
The defending Northwest Division champions could see their 2023 season end without a playoff run depending on results this week. If they lose to Ballard FC on Wednesday, then Oly Town will officially clinch the last playoff spot in the division. Earlier in the season Ballard FC beat CFC with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory, scoring all three goals in the final 20 minutes. CFC led the match early as former Ballard FC striker Francisco Magana scored in the first minute of play. CFC will look to start just as quickly in Salem. The earlier matchup was influenced heavily by the re-introduction of Declan McGlynn to Interbay Stadium as he subbed into the match in the second half and played a key role in Ballard’s comeback. McGlynn will almost certainly be a key factor in Wednesday’s rematch as well.
Wednesday’s match in Salem will kick off at 7:00 PM. Ballard FC fans can watch live at the Reuben’s Brews Taproom or stream from the Capital Community Media YouTube page.
Ballard FC will return to Interbay Stadium on Sunday, July 16th as they face United PDX at 2:00 PM. Tickets are sold out, but fans can watch the match at Reuben’s or stream at goballardfc.com.
