After the club’s first USL2 loss in over 11 months, Ballard FC will be aiming for two wins as they travel to Oregon to face Lane United and
Capital FC Atletico. Now, let’s preview the two matches.
The weekend starts in Eugene on Friday Night as the teams kicks off against Lane United at 7:00 pm. Lane United currently sit sixth in the division standings with six points after six matches. Founded in 2013, Lane United is one of the historic clubs in the Northwest division. They boast a talented soccer with lots of division 1 players, including six locally from Oregon State.
Recently Lane have leaked goals late, costing them a combined three points in their last two matches. Against division leaders Tacoma, Lane had a 1-0 lead going into stoppage time before Tacoma got a last-minute equalizer. Then against West Seattle, the match was tied 2-2 until Junction’s James Lear scored from the halfway line to steal a win in the final seconds. Lane will look to put an end to this trend and start closing out matches better. On the attacking side, Ballard will need to contain Ede Gramberg. The German attacker has two goals in his last two matches and recently earned himself a transfer to Fordham University. After Friday night, the attention will turn to the state capital.
Ballard FC will take on CFC Atletico on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM. The 2021 and 2022 division champions currently sit third in the division with five points after four matches. Ballard FC is 2-2 all-time against CFC and will look to take control of the series this Sunday. This matchup has had some classics over the years. In 2022, CFC gave Ballard FC their first-ever loss. Then in 2023, Peter Kingston’s last second free kick gave former head coach Jason Farrell the perfect sendoff in his final match.
In their last match, CFC won 4-2 against West Seattle with goals from Francisco Magana, Fumiya Shiraishi, and a pair from Umechi Akuazaoku. Magana, CFC’s captain this season, played for Ballard FC in 2022. The CFC roster includes players from talented division one programs like Kentucky, Duquesne, and even locally with Gonzaga. After making the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, CFC sit just one spot back of the playoff line and will look to close this gap on Sunday.
After this road trip, Ballard will travel to Portland on Friday, June 21st to take on United PDX for their third straight road match. Then, they will return home on June 23rd to host FC Olympia. Get tickets to that match here.
